Paris, October 13 – Airbus has successfully completed the inaugural European test flight of the Valkyrie combat drone over northern airspace, marking a pivotal step toward European defense modernization. Developed by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, the uncrewed aerial vehicle reached speeds up to Mach 0.8 during the evaluation. This milestone underpins a strategic partnership aimed at supplying affordable combat mass and collaborative combat aircraft to the German Air Force and broader European military markets by the year 2029.
The recent test flight served primarily to navigate complex European regulatory hurdles and demonstrate baseline flight capabilities for autonomous military drones. Although the aircraft flew without its designated European mission software during this initial trial, future iterations will incorporate advanced technology. Airbus plans to integrate its proprietary MARS Mission System ahead of subsequent test flights scheduled for the first quarter of 2027 to enhance electronic and operational autonomy.
Following the upcoming software integration, Airbus and Kratos intend to conduct vital flight trials teaming the Valkyrie drone directly with Eurofighter jets later in 2027. These coordinated exercises will test the collaborative combat aircraft concept, ensuring the loyal wingman platform can effectively support crewed fighter jets in complex operational scenarios. Defense leadership emphasizes that while the physical airframe originates from the United States, the core intelligence and mission management systems are entirely designed within Europe.
Achieving full combat readiness and delivering these autonomous systems by 2029 remains contingent upon upcoming budgetary clarity and formal procurement decisions from European governments. Estimates suggest significant demand for collaborative combat aircraft within the region, positioning this initiative as a cost-effective force multiplier for modern air forces. By advancing rigorous flight testing and technological integration, Airbus continues to solidify its roadmap for next-generation European aerial defense.
