Rome, Aug. 29 – American Airlines Flight AA52 declared an emergency during approach to Rome after a male passenger suffered a sudden mid-air medical emergency. The Boeing 777-200ER registered N755AN departed Miami International Airport one hour late on the evening of August 26, 2026, bound for Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport. After an eight-hour transatlantic crossing at 38,000 feet, the aircraft began its final descent into the Italian capital on Thursday morning, August 27.
Cabin crew issued an urgent call for medical assistance when the passenger collapsed. Five doctors traveling as passengers immediately responded and began coordinated resuscitation efforts while the widebody jet continued its approach. The flight crew recognized the severity and declared an official emergency by transmitting transponder code 7700 to obtain priority handling from air traffic control.
Flight AA52 landed safely on Runway 16R at Rome Fiumicino Airport at approximately 11:30 CEST. Ground emergency medical services had been pre-positioned on the tarmac and stood ready to assist the passenger as soon as the aircraft stopped after the emergency landing.
Despite the rapid intervention of the five onboard physicians and waiting medical personnel after touchdown, the passenger was pronounced dead after landing following the mid-air medical emergency on the long-haul transatlantic flight.
