Bucharest, October 19 – Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot down two Russian jet-powered Geran attack drones over NATO airspace on October 17, 2026, after the unmanned aircraft entered Romania’s airspace from the Black Sea. Radar systems first detected a group of aerial targets roughly 120 kilometers east of Ukraine’s Snake Island, tracking southwest toward the Romanian coast. The incident marked another breach of alliance territory by advanced Russian drones amid ongoing regional hostilities.
Two F-16s conducting Romania’s air policing mission scrambled from the 86th Air Base at Borcea at 5:43 p.m. local time. The first drone crossed into national airspace at 5:59 p.m. and was destroyed at 6:01 p.m. southeast of the coastal town of Sulina, only two minutes after entry. A second drone entered near 6:00 p.m. and was shot down at 6:05 p.m. east of Sulina after five minutes inside Romanian territory. Both interceptions occurred over territorial waters within four minutes of each other.
Romania’s Ministry of National Defense reported repeated drone activity near the border in the preceding week, with radar recording eight separate incidents involving aerial targets in nearby Ukrainian airspace. Four of those involved brief crossings into Romanian airspace. The latest shootdowns followed a series of drone strikes against commercial vessels operating in the Black Sea, including attacks on tankers in Romanian waters that heightened risks to shipping routes.
Defense officials continue adjusting air defense measures to counter evolving threats and safeguard national sovereignty. The rapid response by Romanian F-16 fighter jets underscores NATO’s readiness to protect eastern flank airspace against jet-powered Geran drones capable of high speeds. Such actions help secure Black Sea maritime corridors vital for grain, energy, and commodity exports amid persistent hybrid challenges.
