Kuala Lumpur, Aug. 18 – Malaysia Airlines has confirmed that all its active pilots have passed mandatory drug screening with negative results, underscoring the airline’s commitment to aviation safety and operational integrity. The comprehensive testing covered 1,260 pilots from the national flag carrier, ensuring every active flight crew member meets the highest standards of fitness and compliance. This successful completion of the pilot phase marks a significant milestone in Malaysia Aviation Group’s proactive measures to maintain trust and reliability in air travel across the region.
The next stage of the drug screening programme will focus on approximately 2,840 cabin crew members, with testing scheduled to begin on 18 August and conclude by 3 September. Malaysia Aviation Group president and group chief executive officer Captain Nasaruddin Bakar emphasised that the organisation is advancing screening across other operational groups to apply rigorous standards consistently throughout its airlines. These steps form part of a broader initiative to strengthen safety protocols following recent industry challenges.
The programme was initiated after Indonesian authorities detained a Malaysian pilot at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in July while carrying a large quantity of illegal substances, with the individual testing positive for prohibited drugs. In parallel, subsidiary Firefly is conducting similar screenings for its 158 pilots and 163 cabin crew, having already tested more than half of them with all results negative to date and aiming for completion by 25 August, ahead of regulatory deadlines set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia.
Malaysia Aviation Group has affirmed that it will sustain a robust random testing programme alongside pre-employment screening, medical certification, recurrent training, mandatory pre-flight compliance checks, and ongoing crew fitness assessments. These continuous measures reinforce the airline’s dedication to drug-free operations, passenger confidence, and elevated aviation safety standards across Malaysia Airlines and its associated carriers.
