Washington, DC, Aug. 13 – As the United States military advances its modernization efforts in 2026, specific variants of the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon are being quietly phased out to prioritize newer, more capable platforms and stabilize production of the F-35 Lightning II and KC-46 Pegasus. By the end of 2026, the US Navy will retire its oldest Block I and Block II Super Hornets along with a portion of EA-18G Growlers, while the US Air Force reduces non-Platinum F-15C/D Eagles and early-block F-16C/Ds. These targeted divestments focus on airframes with high fatigue from carrier operations or decades of service rather than eliminating entire fleets, allowing resources to shift toward Block III Super Hornets, F-15EX Eagle IIs, and advanced F-16 variants. This measured approach ensures higher readiness rates among remaining aircraft while addressing structural limits that make continued operation of the oldest jets increasingly costly and less sustainable.
The US Navy’s oldest Super Hornet variants, particularly early Block II models introduced around 2005 with the APG-79 AESA radar, face the first cuts due to accumulating 6,000 to 7,000 flight hours under the intense stresses of catapult launches and arrested landings. These airframes are being thinned as carrier air wings transition to the Block III standard featuring advanced cockpit systems, reduced radar signatures, and infrared search-and-track capabilities. Simultaneously, the Navy plans to retire 25 of its oldest EA-18G Growlers, relying on upgraded Next Generation Jammer pods to maintain electronic warfare strength with fewer platforms. Squadron sizes are adjusting downward in some cases from 12 to 10 aircraft, redirecting maintenance efforts to keep the surviving Block II and Block III jets at peak operational tempo as new Super Hornet production approaches its close.
On the Air Force side, non-Platinum F-15C/D Eagles are undergoing significant reductions, with roughly 100 airframes set for retirement while approximately 80 low-fatigue Platinum Eagles continue homeland defense alert missions through the early 2030s. The F-15E Strike Eagle faces even larger adjustments, with only about 99 examples equipped with the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engines and EPAWSS electronic warfare suite retained for long-term service out of a fleet exceeding 200. Although congressional limits in the FY2026 NDAA restricted immediate F-15E cuts, the overall trajectory favors the more advanced F-15EX. These changes free capacity for newer fighters that offer superior digital systems and multi-role performance compared to the 1970s-era designs still in limited use.
Early F-16 variants, specifically Block 25, 30, and 32 models from the 1980s, are being withdrawn primarily from Air National Guard wings, the 64th Aggressor Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, and test units at Edwards Air Force Base. Many of these airframes have exceeded their original 8,000-hour service lives and average more than 35 years of operation, making parts cannibalization from Davis-Monthan storage the only practical sustainment path. In contrast, Block 50 and 52 F-16s with more powerful engines remain in service as F-35A deliveries continue to replace them in Guard units. Overall, these 2026 phase-outs of specific Super Hornet, F-15, and F-16 variants reflect a deliberate strategy of concentrating resources on the most capable remaining and incoming aircraft to maintain combat effectiveness amid evolving budget and operational priorities.
