London, October 21 – Britain will carry out defensive air missions over Saudi Arabia using Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets, the Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday. These RAF Typhoons will protect Saudi cities and critical national infrastructure from Houthi aerial attacks. The Iran-aligned group’s strikes threaten regional stability and risk disrupting energy supplies and trade routes.
The aircraft will operate only in a defensive role and will not conduct offensive strikes against the Houthis. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting called the continuing attacks on ally Saudi Arabia absolutely despicable, highlighting the targeting of Riyadh airport. He approved further UK military support, enabling RAF Typhoons to fly defensive air missions shielding Saudi airspace from drones and missiles.
This deployment follows a request from Saudi Arabia’s government. Prime Minister Andy Burnham indicated earlier that Britain was prepared to consider the assistance. It builds on existing UK support, including air defence equipment and air-to-air refuelling already provided.
Britain’s decision to deploy RAF Typhoon jets for these defensive counter-air missions reinforces commitment to Middle East security. The move aims to safeguard vital infrastructure without offensive operations against Houthi targets. Protecting energy supplies and regional stability remains a priority through this targeted military response to escalating Houthi threats.
