Astana, Aug. 30 – Kazakhstan Air Force modernization advances as reports confirm the nation will receive Russian Su-57 fifth-generation fighters within two years, representing a transformative upgrade for its combat aviation capabilities. Orders for these advanced stealth aircraft have already been placed after 2025 confirmations of multiple international purchases, positioning Kazakhstan among early export clients. The service currently fields only Soviet- and Russian-origin jets, including modernized MiG-31BM interceptors inherited from the Soviet era and Su-30SM multirole fighters forming the operational core. This acquisition of fifth-generation fighters for Kazakhstan, the Su-57, will replace aging Su-27 air superiority platforms obtained through prior exchanges.
Only three fifth-generation fighters remain available for export worldwide, namely the Chinese J-35, American F-35, and Russian Su-57, with political barriers rendering F-35 sales improbable. The J-35 emerged as a potential rival following Chinese successes supplying JF-17 Block 3 jets to Azerbaijan and J-10C fighters to Uzbekistan as MiG-29 replacements. Close defense ties with Russia make the Su-57 the probable selection due to superior combat potential over existing Russian types and unique missile access. Kazakhstan thereby becomes the second Soviet successor state after Russia to operate such aircraft and likely the second foreign Su-57 customer after Algeria.
The Su-57 offers distinct advantages including lower maintenance needs, extended range, extensive combat testing, and specialized munitions despite being less sophisticated than J-35 or F-35 counterparts in certain respects. Integration will significantly enhance Kazakhstan Air Defence Forces capabilities against regional threats while maintaining interoperability with Russian systems. Procurement of Russian Su-57 fifth-generation fighters thus cements longstanding military cooperation and fleet evolution from Soviet-era assets.
