Tokyo, Sept. 2 – Japan’s Ministry of Defense will begin procurement of AARGM-ER anti-radiation missiles in 2027, according to the fiscal year 2027 budget document. These next-generation U.S. air-launched missiles will arm fighter jets, including the F-35, to counter Chinese air defenses, giving the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force its first weapon of this class amid increased Chinese military activity around Japan.
The AARGM-ER or AGM-88G Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile Extended Range detects, suppresses, and destroys fixed radar sites, mobile surface-to-air systems, command posts, and integrated air defense elements. Multi-mode guidance enables continued attack after radar stations switch off tracking non-radiating targets. Developed for the U.S. Navy Super Hornet and Growler, the program expanded to F-35A, F-35B, and F-35C variants.
Procurement allows employment from U.S.-made platforms; Japan plans to fly for decades expanding strike capabilities previously constrained by defensive limits. The missiles deliver suppression of enemy air defenses against Chinese systems with compatibility for Japanese fighter jet fleets.
